JOÃO NEIVA WON THE SPECIAL TRIALS

Tiago Fazendeiro and Bernardo Barroso also guaranteed a place in Sumol Nazaré Special Edition

João Neiva, athlete of Moledo do Minho, Viana do Castelo, won the Special Trials, this Sunday, gaining the right to participate in Sumol Nazaré Special Edition. Before the beginning of the qualification, the organization announced that two more openings where added to the main competition. These openings where conquered by Tiago Fazendeiro and Bernardo Barroso, 2nd and 3rd places, respectively, of the Specials Trials.

For Nuno Amado, Sports Director of the Sumol Nazaré Special Edition 2011, the act of calling the two athletes for the main competition was the way to prize the perseverance and commitment of the athletes that signed in for the Special Trials. "After the 25 athletes applied to access the trials for Sumol Nazaré Special Edition 2001, we thought that it would be fair, for those that showed to be humble enough to participate, that we should open two more openings”, said Nuno Amado.

The 12 selected athletes, who participated in the Special Trials, guaranteed a good show at Praia do Norte, with 1 meter good waves, with tubes and some aerial moves. João Neiva, after the two rounds and the final, was the winner of the match with 39.72 points. The performance of this bodyboarder was consistent all over the rounds.

Tiago Fazendeiro has occupied the second place on the podium, with 37.64 points. The athlete from São Pedro de Moel, with a regular presence at Praia do Norte, accomplished – even with small waves – quality inverts. Bernardo Barroso, athlete from Carcavelos, reached the third position, with 37 points. Even though not being a very experienced bodyboarder with the Praia do Norte waves, he used an aggressive surf style and reached a 9 points wave, after a surprising tube.

The fight among the rest of the finalists – Bernardo Jerónimo, Silvano Lourenço and Hugo Macatrão – was very competitive, all having excellent waves. Bernardo Jerónimo was the only one to achieve a score of 10 in this event, with a perfect tube and a backflip. Although achieving this score, he needed two more good scores in order to have a place in the podium.

Sumol Nazaré Special Edition 2011 confirms one more athlete
Rui Pereira is also confirmed for the Sumol Nazaré Special Edition 2001. The athlete from Costa da Caparica, that has been trying his luck in the last years on the World Circuit with some good scores, is one of the invited bodyboarders to be in the competition.

Sumol Nazaré Special Edition 2011 website (www.specialedition.com.pt) presents the profile of the 20 athletes already confirmed for the competition, as well as reveals their expectations and what they think about the event and Praia do Norte.
Incorporated in the International Bodyboard Association (IBA) calendar, this year Special Edition waiting period will be from October 12th to November 1st.

Ricardo Guedes patronizes the competition
Ricardo Guedes patronizes Sumol Nazaré Special Edition 2011. For the Portuguese Model and Bodyboarder, the Special Edition represents “the extreme bodyboard, and there the athletes compete in ideal conditions for a guaranteed show”.

Last Saturday, October 1st, Ricardo Guedes hanged with some athletes of the Sumol Nazaré Special Edition 2011 and the Special Trials, on the Royal Caribbean Experience. Aboard of the ship Independence of the Seas, the athletes showed some bodyboard moves on the flowrider, an equipment that creates the effect of a static wave, on a Royal Caribbean event with the partnership of the program A Onda da Rita (Rita´s Wave).

Nazaré Canyon and Praia do Norte waves
Nazaré Canyon is a rare geomorphologic accident, the biggest in Europe and one of the largest in the world, consisting in a flaw on the continental plaque about 170 km long and 5 km depth. Settled front to Praia do Norte, leads the Atlantic waves to this beach, almost without obstacles, creating waves with an unusual size compared to the rest of the Portuguese coast. A truly playground for all waves sports lovers who find here the ideal set to go over their limits.
