SUMOL NAZARÉ SPECIAL EDITION 2011
WITH A NEW WAITING PERIOD IN JANUARY

Competition will be postponed to the beginning of the next year, according to available dates on the calendar of the IBA.

The Sumol Nazaré Special Edition will be delayed until January, and the new waiting period is expected to be from 2nd to 30th of that month. The requirements established by the organization to carry out the fifth edition of the competition have not been, nor will be completed over the window initially established - between 12th of  October and the 1st of  November - so the competition will be postponed to the beginning of  the next year according to the available dates on the calendar of the International Bodyboarding Association (IBA).

“During the waiting period unfortunately the requirements where not completed, and will not be, for the proper conduct of the competition in terms of the swell direction, size and wind. Several windows of opportunity arose, but none proved, or will prove until November 1st,  to be satisfactory in accordance with requirements we feel that are important to ensure an excellent bodyboard performance as (organization, athletes and the audience) all want, in full security”, explains Dino Casimiro, the technical direction of the competition.

The organization of Sumol Nazaré Special Edition 2011 established certain requirements for the conduct of the competition, passing by factors such as duration, wind and waves.

Duration of Sumol Nazaré Special Edition 2011: 8 hours (two rounds with four heats of 45 minutes each, a final with one hour and one hour intervals between heats, rounds and final).

Wind: No wind or offshore wind (weak to moderate NE quadrant, E or SE) constant over the duration of the competition.

Waves:  Approximately between two and three meters over the duration of the test.

“Praia do Norte is a unique place in the world. With certain type and direction of waves, mainly coming from WNW in the range of 290º with long period of waves, goes from one meter to six meters in a few hours. That's what happened on October 16th. In addition to this absurd rise of the sea, the fog that was felt throughout the morning and at lunchtime intensified, coupled with moderate onshore wind that had subsequently, led us to believe that in fact we were right and that would not be the Special Day we all wanted to be. The same will happen this weekend (Saturday), with greater waves compared to October 16th. The waves are going to be huge without prior notice and the wind, although favorable in the morning, will run to the Northwest and increase in intensity after the lunch hour, affecting the conditions of proof”, says Dino Casimiro.

 The competition is incorporated in the International Bodyboard Association (IBA) calendar and will count with the 24 athletes already announced: Luís “Porkito” Pereira, Fábio “Marreta” Laureano, Gonçalo “Pitaça” Campos, Jaime Jesus, Ricardo Faustino, António Cardoso, João “Mag8” André, Gastão Entrudo, Dino Carmo, Tiago Moita Silva, Paulo Costa, Filipe “Fifi” Ferreira, Manuel Centeno, João Pinheiro, Rui Ferreira, Francisco “Chico” Pinheiro, Bernardo Barroso, Tiago Fazendeiro, João Neiva, Rui Pereira, Dudu Pedra, Jeff Hubbard, Pierre Louis Costes and Amaury Lavernhe.

“We believe that in January we will be able to gather the best conditions for the realization of Sumol Nazaré Special Edition in order to provide an excellent performance, which is what everyone wants”, says Casimiro.

Nazaré Canyon and Praia do Norte waves
Nazaré Canyon is a rare geomorphologic accident, the biggest in Europe and one of the largest in the world, consisting in a flaw on the continental plaque about 170 km long and 5 km depth. Settled front to Praia do Norte, leads the Atlantic waves to this beach, almost without obstacles, creating waves with an unusual size compared to the rest of the Portuguese coast. A truly playground for all waves sports lovers who find here the ideal set to go over their limits.
